New to the Library - Year 7

How do I...

You can borrow books, magazines and sporting equipment from Mitchell library.  When you have made your choice, take the item to the front desk of the library for the library staff to process in your name. You will need your library/ID card. St. Bernard's College has a subscription to Wheelers if you would like to read a book online or listen to an audio book.

You may borrow:

Books for 3 weeks

eBooks and audio Books for 1 week

Sporting equipment for a session (either recess or lunch)

Click here to go to our library catalogue to renew your books online. You can also access this feature through MYSBC. You will be prompted to enter your login details if you haven't already (top right corner). A dropdown box will appear under your name. Click Loans - this will show all your items on loan. Renew your books by clicking "Select All" or ticking the individual books and hitting renew button. Items marked with a red cross cannot be renewed.

Find a book

If you want to know if the library has the latest novel from your favourite author or some coaching tips about the sport you love to play on the weekend; follow these steps -

  • Click on the Icon which says "Library Catalogue" in MYSBC or type in a keyword directly into the search box in the Mitchell library website.  This link will take you into our school library catalogue which lists all the books and equipment that you can borrow from our library as well as links to valuable resources such as URL's and video streaming.

  • Once you have entered a search term, the results will appear below. Type in a keyword that relates to your request such as an author name, book title or general search term or topic. The icons below will show you if the resource is a book, dvd, ebook, website, audiobook or equipment. A circled green tick means the item is available for borrowing.

  • Remember...the wider your search term, the more general information or resources will be listed. If you don't find what you are looking for the first time then try narrowing your search term for more specific information. For example, instead of typing AFL, try searching for AFL coaches.
  • If you locate a suitable book on our catalogue, you then need to find it on the shelves. Fiction books are shelved according to the genre. The books are then sorted within alphabetical order using the first 3 letters of the authors surname. For example, all books relating to the author Robert Muchamore can be located under "Mystery", MUC on the fiction shelves.
  • In order to locate non-fiction books that you have found on the library catalogue - write down the "Dewey number" mentioned in the catalogue record (it can range from 3 to 10 numbers, with a decimal point after the first 3 numbers and followed by 3 letters that relate to the author. For example, books relating to AFL usually have a dewey number starting with 796.336 and will all be located on the shelves at this position.

Reserve a Book

When your book of choice is out on loan to another patron, you can always reserve this item. When the book is returned, the library staff will place the book on hold for you to collect from the library front desk. You will be notified by email when it is available.

Click on the Library Catalogue under Mitchell Library in MYSBC

Click on the drop down box under your name. Make sure you are logged in (top right corner).

Search for the book/dvd you wish to borrow. Click on the cover to bring up the catalogue record. On the left under the book cover image you can click RESERVE

Renew a Book

You can "Renew" a book you already have on loan if the book is not more than 2 weeks overdue, hasn't been renewed more than twice before and has not been reserved for another student.
